In teaching online, I have decided I must find ways to integrate some of my favorite aspects of teaching in class in an electronic environment. One of the things I love the most is seeing all the students' faces and getting to interact with them in ways that reveal who they are. Here is an assignment that I adapted from similar assignments I found on the internet in order to get to see a bit of who my students are in e-format...
Note that this assignment was given as the very first thing students needed to do and posted in a discussion forum in which they could post a description about themselves and upload their avatar for all to see.
Step 1: Find an avatar maker
If you already have an avatar, you can share that one with us. If not, then find a free avatar maker online and create your own. The best way to do this is to search in google for something along the lines of: "create avatar from photo free". Be careful not to click on any suspicious links and to work with an option that looks legit and that will not make this too challenging for you.
Step 1 Continued: Example of an avatar maker
Here is an example of a free avatar maker available online that allows you to upload a photo of yourself and then turns your picture into a cartoon picture that somewhat resembles you. Make sure you save the file it produces, and label it something obvious, such as: avatar.
Step 2: Share your avatar, and view those of others
Click into this discussion forum, scroll to the bottom, click reply, enter some text to say your name and anything about us that is interesting and worth sharing (keep it appropriate). Then click the button to upload a file from your computer, navigate to your avatar, and upload it. Be sure to click submit when you are finished.
Step 3: Do a happy dance!
Congrats!! You just finished one of your first assignments in this course, and hopefully made us smile in the process. See; you can do this. No sweat! Next step: Do a little happy dance to celebrate. Now on to the rest of the assignments and the fun learning they bring:-)
